Family Friendly Christmas Events in D/FW

'Tis the season to have some holiday fun with the family. I have lived in Dallas my entire life, and I can safely say it is one of the greatest cities there is. We may not have a lot of snow to make it feel like Christmas, but we sure do have a slew of Christmas events to make up for the lack of precipitation.

Since this jolly holiday is my favorite holiday, I have attended many events myself, so I decided to make a list of places that stood out to me the most. All of the places I have collected are great for piling up the family in the car and spending some of that good ol' quality time with them that you've been craving.

ICE! at the Gaylord

This place is made entirely of--you guessed it--ice! In order to see the attraction, you need to purchase tickets that start at $12.99 for the kids and $21.99 for adults. This is a walk-through exhibit that is kept at 9 degrees, but don't worry if you are worried about being too cold--parkas are supplied for the whole family. This year's theme is 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, in case you were wondering.

Carriage Rides in Highland Park

There's something about sitting on a horse drawn carriage during the holidays while sipping on hot cocoa and looking at Christmas lights. Highland Park offers various carriages that take you on a ride to look at the lights on the beautiful homes. If it's cold, the driver may not provide you with a parka, but they will most likely supply you with a cozy blanket. Various companies offer these carriage rides, and most let you reserve your time online so you don't have to wait around for an available carriage. Companies to consider are as follows:

  • Brazos Carriage

  • Whitehaven Carriage

  • Vintage Carriage

  • Four Winds Carriage Co.

Holiday Wonder at Fair Park

Holiday Wonder is a new Christmas wonderland that is located in Fair Park near downtown Dallas. There are over two million lights to be seen, so you're bound to be awed by the beauty of the holiday glow. In addition to the light displays, one can also find acrobatic shows, dancing, music, an arctic slide, and more. Check out their website for their daily entertainment schedule. Tickets are $12 for the kids, and $20 for the adults, or there is a package that's good for two adults and two kids for $54.00.

The 12 Days of Christmas at the Dallas Arboretum

This event was dubbed one of the "South's Best Holiday Experiences" by Southern Living Magazine, which means that it's an exhibit that is sure to get you in the Christmas mood. Folks can walk along the paths to check out the fantastic representations of holiday cheer. You and your family can view the handmade gazebos during the day for the price of an admission ticket, but if you want to take the family to see it at night, it's going to be a little more out of the pocket. Nighttime prices are $10 for kids and they start at $15 for adults.

Santa's Village in Richardson

Okay, now this place is COOL. I remember coming here as a child and thinking I was at the REAL North Pole. So yes, you should probably take your kids here. This place has been crafted to look like an actual village with 16 houses the kids can walk through. There are crafts, live music, and, of course, Santa Clause! Oh, and what's the best part about Santa's Village? It's F R E E.
